James T. Farrell (1904-1979) was an Irish-American novelist, short story writer, journalist, travel writer, poet, and literary critic. Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, he attended the University of Chicago and published his first short story in 1929. Bernstein met Thomas Wolfe in 1925 on a voyage between Europe and New York. Wolfe and Bernstein, the wife of a prominent New York stock broker and 18 years older than Wolfe, became lovers in Oct. 1925 and remained so for the next five years.
